Hi PAWS launched on Jan. 1, 2004, as a follow-up organization to HiPAR, or, HiPlains Animal Rescue. HiPAR had to close its doors to rescuing, sheltering, rehabilitation and adopting, so Hi PAWS was formed to carry on the important work of spaying and neutering. Our goals now will focus on public education and providing assistance to help get as many animals spayed and neutered as possible. We realize the costs of veterinary services are continually on the rise and fewer and fewer people are able or willing to pay the latest prices. After all, it’s “just a cat,” or it’s “just a dog,” and some people feel it’s wasteful to spend very much on their critters.

In particular, some rural residents, who are accustomed to watching animals come and go in what they call the “normal cycle of life and death,” are especially resistant to the concepts of spaying and neutering, and even basic veterinary care to ensure their animals lead healthy lives may be regarded as unnecessary. With proper care, even a barn cat or farm dog can live a long life. Without that, however, most are doomed to very short lives, as they provide fodder for predators and disease, all considered “normal” out on the farm.
